We all reach a point in our lives where we think on our place in this world. I was on a bus when a stranger would speak truth and give me unexpected insight into my place in this world.

Where is my Place in this World?

After having given up my car, I was committed to taking public transport. Public transport is not too wonderful in South Africa and the Gautrain is my preferred mode of transport.

Now I had arrived at my last stop and had to wait for the last minibus to return. My laptop bag was empty, work had been hectic and I just wanted to enjoy my peace and quiet. Even though I am generally a talkative person, that day was not a great day at all!

Finally the minibus arrives and I take a seat and discover that I am the only other passenger. Seconds before we depart a young woman jumps into the minibus but I think nothing of it. The bus driver pulls away and so this young woman and I start talking. It turns out we got along rather well and after barely five minutes we start speaking of our dreams and aspirations. Naturally all my conversations leans towards travel and that’s when she said something what would get me thinking.

Unexpected Truth

I talk about my desire to live abroad and she continues to question me on this urge. As a response I tell her about growing up in another country and suddenly she says,

It seems like you don’t belong to one specific country, you belong to many.

This statement hits be square in the heart and I don’t know what to say. Barely a moment later her stop arrives and she pops out, leaving me in deep thought.

Isn’t this the case with all travelers? Don’t we all belong to the many countries we have seen and are yet to see? We travel the world, leaving pieces of our soul as we go, linking us to each place permanently.

The Traveler’s Curse

As a traveler, we are cursed to see the world and not belong anywhere. A traveler sees so much of the world and this changes us deep within our souls. The changes are not always noticeable but they alter the course of our lives and push us in a new directions.

Traveling is one of the greatest joys that exists, in my opinion, and to see the world is what I dream of. If this means that I will never be content with one place, always searching for my place in this world, then so be it. My life took a turn for the better when I boarded first plane to Ireland and I don’t regret a single day.

When was the last time a stranger revealed a truth about you?
